About

What is the Gateshead Independent Tenants’ Organisation Project?

A project is underway to explore options for a new Independent Tenants’ Organisation, to represent tenants of Gateshead Council and the Gateshead Housing Company.

This new organisation will be independent of Gateshead Council and Gateshead Housing Company. It will be run by and for tenants, helping to:

• Represent tenants’ opinions of housing services
• Set local standards that promote choice
• Target service improvements
• Provide accountability in decisions that affect them

Who is running this project?

The project is being led by independent consultants from Wood Holmes and Gentoo Group, commissioned by Gateshead Council. They are currently gathering tenants’ views on what shape the organisation should take.

The team will also examine tenant participation and involvement activities that have worked well in other parts of the country. They will draw on this research and input from tenants to develop a range of options for consultation later in the year.

Once the new organisation is formed, it will be handed over completely to tenants.
